From 23 to 25 June, Dr. Hiroe Ishihara (The University of Tokyo) and Prof. Unai Pascual (Basque Centre for Climate Change, BC3, and Ikerbasque) co-hosted the Second San Sebastián Workshop on Relational Values in San Sebastián, Spain.
Relational values—the values that emerge from relationships among people and between people and nature—have become an influential concept in biodiversity governance, including the work of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Around a decade ago, the first San Sebastián workshop played an important role in shaping and advancing this concept.
Bringing together 17 leading international scholars in the field of relational values, the workshop reviewed a decade of research, identified emerging challenges, and discussed future directions for advancing the role of relational values in biodiversity governance and justice-oriented sustainability. Discussions also considered how the concept can move beyond theoretical debates to inform policy and practice in addressing contemporary biodiversity challenges.
The workshop was held as part of a collaborative research project under the partnership agreement between Kubota Corporation and the University of Tokyo, with additional support from the Sumitomo Foundation Environmental Research Grant Program and the Environmental Research and Technology Development Fund (S-21).
2026年6月23日から25日にかけて、スペイン・サンセバスチャンにおいて、東京大学大学院新領域創成科学研究科附属サステイナブル社会デザインセンターの石原広恵准教授と、バスク気候変動センター（BC3）のUnai Pascual教授の主催により、「第2回 関係性価値（Relational Values）に関するワークショップ」が開催されました。
関係性価値とは、人と人、人と自然との関係のなかで生まれる価値を捉える概念であり、「生物多様性と生態系サービスに関する政府間科学－政策プラットフォーム（IPBES）」をはじめとする国際的な生物多様性ガバナンスの議論において重要な役割を果たしています。約10年前に開催された第1回ワークショップは、この概念の形成と発展に大きく貢献しました。
今回は、関係性価値研究をけん引する17名の研究者が世界各国から集まり、この10年間の研究の進展を振り返るとともに、新たな研究課題や今後の展望について議論を行いました。特に、生物多様性ガバナンスや公正で持続可能な社会の実現に向けて、関係性価値がどのような役割を果たし得るのかについて活発な議論が交わされました。また、関係性価値を理論的な議論にとどめることなく、生物多様性をめぐる今日的課題に対する政策や実践にどのように活かしていくことができるのかについても検討が行われました。
なお、本ワークショップは、株式会社クボタと東京大学とのパートナーシップ協定に基づく共同研究プロジェクトの一環として開催され、公益財団法人住友財団の環境研究助成および環境省の環境研究総合推進費（S-21）の支援を受けて実施されました。
